Dance Artist

Marlene Strang is a dance educator, choreographer, and performer based in Phoenix, Arizona. She is the founder of Smirk, an ad hoc modern company creating untraditional work for and with all ages in unexpected venues.

She has been creating work in Denver for the past 9 years and has set work for the Denver Art Museum’s “Untitled” series, the Cherry Creek Art Denver Festival, Anne Green Gilbert’s Kaleidoscope Dance Company, the Center for Visual Art at Metropolitan State University, the dancers of the Colorado Ballet, and many others.

Marlene has served as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction for Colorado Ballet, worked in the dance programming office of the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., co-founded Elevation Dance, a Boulder, Colorado based children’s dance company, and produced dance concerts in Boulder and Oakland, California with Clutch, a pop up modern company she co-founded.

She received her B.F.A. in Dance with an emphasis in Education from Arizona State University, where she also obtained her secondary teaching certificate in Dance Education. Marlene’s research on dance pedagogy has twice been presented at the National Dance Education Organization conference and also been published in Dance Magazine.

Currently, she is pursuing an MA in Dance Education at the University of Northern Colorado, working as an adjunct faculty at Grand Canyon University, and launching a children’s modern dance company in collaboration with the Phoenix Center for the Arts. Marlene is also a Board member of Dance and the Child International, which focuses on bringing opportunities for young people to experience dance as creators, performers, and spectators throughout the world.
